DESCRIPTION:
A combination medication containing glimepiride (1 mg) and metformin (1000 mg), used to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes
How it works
Glimepiride (a sulfonylurea) stimulates insulin release from the pancreas.
Metformin (a biguanide) lowers liver glucose production, delays intestinal absorption, and increases insulin sensitivity
Uses
Prescribed alongside diet and exercise to treat type 2 diabetes when one drug alone isn’t sufficient
Dosage & Administration
Taken once daily with food, ideally with the evening or main meal.
Tablets should be swallowed whole — do not crush or chew
Side Effects
Common:
Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia): sweating, dizziness, headache, shaking
Nausea, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, metallic taste, upper respiratory infection, weight gain, headache
Serious but rare:
Lactic acidosis (especially if kidney disease, heavy alcohol use): symptoms include nausea, muscle pain, breathing difficulty, slow heartbeat
Decreased vitamin B12 with long-term use .
Precautions & Contraindications
Not suitable for:
Type 1 diabetes
Diabetic ketoacidosis
Severe kidney or liver impairment
Pregnancy and breastfeeding (unsafe or not recommended)
Use with caution in older adults, cardiovascular disease, before surgeries, or with other drugs that affect blood sugar. Kidney and liver functions should be monitored .
