Mahacef Drops (contains cefixime), a pediatric antibiotic

What is it & when to use it?

Active ingredient: Cefixime (third‑generation cephalosporin antibiotic).

Indications: Bacterial infections in children, e.g.:

Ear, throat & sinus infections (otitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis)

Respiratory infections (bronchitis, pneumonia)

Urinary tract infections

Typhoid (uncomplicated)

Sometimes gonorrhea

Dosage & administration

Typically prescribed based on age and weight, e.g., 5 mg/kg every 12 h for many infections in ages 2 months–12 years (max 100–200 mg/dose) .

Shake well; can be taken with or without food. Use a proper measuring device.

Course duration depends on infection type: usually 5–10 days, full course essential even if symptoms improve earlier.

Side effects & precautions

Common: Diarrhea (can be watery/bloody), nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache.

Serious (rare): Severe diarrhea (C. difficile colitis), allergic reactions, skin rashes, unusual bleeding, liver issues.

Warnings:

Not for viral illnesses (e.g. colds)
